Chester Alan Arthur became the twenty-first President of the United States of America in 1881, with the death of James Abram Garfield. After Garfield’s death Chester Alan Arthur was sworn into the office as President. Since he was the Vice-President, he had no Vice-President to serve with him. Chester Alan Arthur served one term, from 1881 to 1885.
Chester Alan Arthur was born on October 5, 1829, in Fairfield, VT. He lived his early years with his father who was a Baptist minister. In 1845, Chester Arthur became a student of Union College; he studied to be a lawyer. His days as a student were normal; he was an average student. In 1854, Chester Arthur became a lawyer in New York City. Soon after becoming a lawyer, Chester Alan took a case, which involved a black woman named Lizzie Jennings. Her case was against a streetcar company in New York City, which was a racial based case. Lizzie Jennings was forced out of a whites only streetcar, so she sued, and Chester Alan and Lizzie Jennings won the suit, this ended the racial issue of segregation in New York’s transportation.

When Chester Arthur became President he had to deal with the issues of reform: the people of America did not think he was for reform. But President Arthur was for reform with all his might: with the prior presidents there had been scandals, the presidents were assigning important government office to people that had either supported him for president or as payoffs. Chester Arthur had stated that he got the presidency of the United States with a debt only owed to the Almighty. What he was telling the people that had supported him during the run for Vice-Presidency was that he owed no one except God.
Chester Alan Arthur would only serve the remainder of that term: unfortunately he was not able to do as much as wanted and he lost the election of 1884 to Grover Cleveland by a landslide.
