Biography - Norton, Charles Eliot
1827–1908, American scholar and teacher, b. Cambridge, Mass., grad. Harvard, 1846. As professor of the history of art at Harvard (1875–98) and as a man of letters he had a stimulating influence on his time. He edited (1864–68), with James Russell Lowell, the North American Review and was a founder (1865) of the Nation. Of his several scholarly works, the most notable were his Italian studies and his prose translation (3 vol., 1891–92) of Dante.
