He studied zoology before teaching biology at the Univ. of Chicago (1946–52) and the California Institute of Technology (1954–84). In the 1950s and 60s, he was a pioneer in conducting behavioral investigations of the brain’s hemispheres. In 1981 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with David H. Hubel and Torsten N. Wiesel.
