Before he died, he publicly retracted, but his followers in Champagne formed a heretical sect, the Amalricians. They were condemned by Pope Innocent III and by councils held at Paris (1210) and the Lateran (1215). The heresy resulted in a temporary ban on Aristotle and the Arabic philosophers at the Univ. of Paris.
