Biography - Rauch, Christian Daniel
(kr s´tyän dä´ny l roukh) (KEY) , 1777–1857, German sculptor. After studying in Rome (1804–11 and again later), where his work was influenced by Thorvaldsen, he achieved a reputation as an outstanding sculptor of tombs, monuments, and portraits. His major works include monuments to Queen Louise, Emperor Alexander of Russia, and Frederick the Great (Berlin). The latter, Rauch’s chief work, is a colossal bronze equestrian statue of Frederick on a pedestal, with groups of generals and soldiers and with bas-reliefs depicting various scenes from his life.
