Biography - Sandby, Paul
(s nd´b ) (KEY) , 1725–1809, English watercolorist and draftsman. He was employed to survey the Highlands of Scotland after the 1745 rebellion. During his years in Scotland (1746–51) he learned to interpret landscape with delicacy and precision of detail. Most of his paintings of landscapes are done in watercolor or gouache; many of his most important drawings he reproduced in aquatint, a process that he introduced in England. Windsor Castle is the subject of a number of his drawings, which have sometimes been confused with those of his brother, Thomas (1721–99), also a fine draftsman. Much of Paul’s work is in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
See A. P. Oppé, The Drawings of Paul and Thomas Sandby … at Windsor Castle (1947).
