1912–, American sculptor, b. South Orange, N.J. Formerly an architect associated with Frank Lloyd Wright, Smith applies architectural principles to his monumental black steel sculpture. Allied with the minimalist school (see modern art), he works with simple geometrical modules combined on a three-dimensional grid, creating drama through simplicity and scale. His work is represented at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City.
