1810–64, American publisher. John Reed and James T. Fields became Ticknor’s partners in Boston, and their firm is best known as Ticknor and Fields. They published the works of many of the famous Americans of the day, including Longfellow, Lowell, and O. W. Holmes, and their offices were the meeting place of literary men. From 1854 to 1864 the firm published the Atlantic Monthly and the North American Review. Ticknor was the first American publisher to pay foreign authors for the rights to their works.
